Computer Intensive Study Skills 555 Copyright 2005 by Carl H. Peterson PROBLEM AND COMMENTARY Many students are overwhelmed by study assignments. Most students abandon their attempts to study and limit their choices for life. Comment about study skills. Most diligent students have relied on note taking from textbooks. Sorting on 3x5 cards rewriting notes or outlining is very time consuming. "SQ3R" and Harvard outlines have been a widely used but are time consuming study skill methods. Peterson study skills 555 helps you absorb 3 to 10 times more information per study hour. Peterson Study Guides save time you would otherwise spend: Deciding which sources to use. Deciding which key words to search. Downloading and saving each source. Indexing each source. Wading through material you don't need. Diverting your attention to other topics. ----------------------------- SEARCH ENGINE LIMITS Internet search engines usually find the names and locations of files with keywords in the text. You still have to search the text again or read the article to find what you need. To get multiple viewpoints you must repeat the extra search process with each file source. ----------------------------- TIME SAVING TECHNIQUES FAST MULTIPLE SEARCHES Meaning Searches in specially collected and indexed electronic files. Selected "main ideas" and keywords are included with our indexes. 555 students search one suggested keyword or main idea through dozens of pre-selected articles or books. The search finds defining information. The student writes 2 words from the sentences above or below the "find". Students write the words on a clustered "memory pattern" or memory map. Students collect 20 pairs of words in a five minute period. This is followed by a 5 minute "tell-back" to a tape recorder or another student. The tell-back is followed by a five minute "fast-write" (rough draft). Total time 15 minutes Repeat the 15 minute process with as many other keywords until you meet your needs.
SAVE DOZENS OR HUNDREDS OF HOURS Here is an example of a typical study task 500 pages of 400 words = 200,000 words 700 pages of 300 words = 210,000 words. If you have to read 200,000 words at a reading speed of 400 words per minute = 50 hours 200 words per minute = 100 hours 100 words per minute = 200 hours 50 words per minute = 400 hours. Note: most persons read scientific or technical material at less than 50 words per minute. The above example does not include hours you need for making notes and writing. 555 is a dramatic reduction of total study time. One "find" each 15 seconds 4 "finds" per minute 20 finds each 5 minutes 40 words collected on a memory pattern. Total time 5 minutes Tape a tell back for 5 minutes Total time now 10 minutes. Make a 5 minute fast write. Total time now 15 minutes. If each 555 search process is limited to 15 minutes you can accomplish 20 idea or topic searches every 5 hours.
